1. What Is a Postpartum Care Center?

A postpartum care center (산후조리원) is a residential facility where mothers rest and receive newborn care support for 2–4 weeks after delivery. It is regulated under the Mother and Child Health Act.

2. Government Registration Requirements

• Must notify and register with the local health authority (보건소)
• Facility must meet the Mother and Child Health Act standards
• Infection control protocols are mandatory

3. Facility Standards

• Minimum 100 m² floor area
• Separate rooms for mother and newborn
• Newborn care room with temperature control
• Adequate infection control: UV sterilization, hand-washing stations
• Emergency medical equipment (basic)

4. Staff Requirements

• At least one registered nurse (간호사) or nursing assistant (간호조무사) on duty 24/7
• Nursing staff ratio: at least 1 per 3 pairs of mothers and newborns
